Following a successful pilot project, undertaken in conjunction with NHS South West Digital Transformation team, GP Online was launched and adopted by nearly 70 surgeries and PCNs in the South West.

About GP Online and the standardised GP website project

Procured via GCloud, the NHS South West region engaged with Spindogs to deliver a new, standardised GP website solution as part of a pilot digital transformation scheme. The scheme aimed to boost the use of digital channels, encourage patients to self-serve where possible and alleviate pressure on GP practices and their staff.

Addressing the pressure of increased GP workload
A lack of confidence in the current digital offering of GPs is reinforcing patients to favour traditional communication channels – telephone calls and onsite visits – further adding to the workload of GP practices.

NHS England is aiming for 25% of all appointments to be booked online. Encouraging patients to channel shift, where appropriate, away from traditional methods is key to meeting these objectives, and an appropriate online solution was needed to help ease the burden.

A consistent and familiar patient experience

A standardised solution, drawing on the familiarity of the NHS visual brand and framework aligned to consistent and simplified navigation was required. Working alongside both patient participation groups, the regional delivery team and GPs, the following key journeys and patient outcomes were identified and are fundamental to the GP Online solution:

Make, change, or cancel an appointment
Obtain a fit note (formerly sick note) for work
Request a repeat prescription
Access test results
Register with/join a practice
Find practice hours, phone number, and address
