Developed by Spindogs alongside the NHS South West Digital Transformation team, GP Online blends patient-focused digital experiences with operational channel shift and increased regional controls and visibility.
Following a successful Pilot and post-launch Phase 1, nearly 80 GPs or PCNs in the South West have adopted GP Online as their GP website solution. However, GP Online delivers much more than ‘just a website’.
Preventative healthcare and self-service features
Following in-depth consultation with patient participation groups and driven by self-serve objectives, GP Online has been designed with improved patient experience at its core.
Also aligned to approved NHS visual frameworks, WCAG 2.2 AA standards are fundamental to the design and build of GP Online, allowing patients of all abilities to book appointments, access information, and manage care independently.
Combined with accessible baseline content and an intuitive language switcher and mobile-first, patient inclusivity and healthcare access in your region or ICB is maximised, regardless of device, age, ability, or dialect.
In addition to regional content, GP Online incorporates the capability to showcase directories of local community groups, wellness programs, and support networks, enabling patients to explore non-medical interventions tailored to their needs. The linking of interactive tools such as appointment booking systems and prescription requests reduce reliance on in-person visits, promoting self-sufficiency.
GP Online allows practices to bridge the gap between clinical care and community support, fostering healthier behaviours and alleviating pressure on healthcare systems.
Many GPs and PCNs attempt to incorporate detailed symptom checkers or condition and treatment information directly into their websites. As this information is readily available and accessible on both the NHS App and NHS A-Z, this approach provides risk to both content accuracy and consistency in addition to introducing an additional maintenance burden to practices themselves.
GP Online instead focuses on signposting to already existing and approved information within the NHS and related services, empowers patients to take proactive steps in managing their health in a familiar and trusted environment.
With ambitions for 25% of appointments occurring online, high call volumes and wasted appointments are an obvious area for redress.
With its strong focus on self-service and preventative healthcare combined with optimised and efficient navigation, GP Online delivers genuinely measurable channel shift including call reduction* and greater adoption of digital healthcare services**.
*Average reduction of 80 calls per day in 6 months since Pilot launch – Corner Place Surgery.
**10% of all visitors engaged with an online consultation tool in 12 months since Pilot launch – Data from 17 websites participating in the NHS South West Pilot scheme.

“The website has been well received by patients. The new online booking system is working well alongside the new website format.”
Regional controls combined with flexibility for practices
Instead of building GP or PCN websites on a fragmented, individual basis, GP Online places consistency of experience and centralised performance visibility and messaging distribution at its heart, while still enabling practices the freedom to self-manage.
Ensure consistent messaging across the region or ICB with a centrally controlled emergency messaging function. Immediately visible on landing, each surgery or PCN website will display your message during periods of medical, social or geographic (e.g. extreme weather) emergency.
When not in use, surgeries will be able to use the emergency messaging and notification function to inform patients of localised issues, such as closures or localised weather or incidents.
In addition to greatly improved individual analytics reporting for each surgery or PCN, GP Online also collates analytics for all sites in on easy-to-use dashboard. This enables regions or ICBs to benchmark individual surgeries against the region or draw insight from averaged performance or a much deeper data set of online patient behaviours.
GP Online is not a ‘stand still’ product, and regions and ICBs as well as individual GPs and PCNs are actively encouraged to participate in a centralised improvement group. Looking at core improvements and identifying opportunities for new functionality or improved efficiency, the group prioritises the development of new updates to GP Online which, once tested and launched, are then rolled out to all websites simultaneously.

Commercial benefits and managed support for regions and ICBs
As demonstrated by the collated launch of nearly 70 GP and PCN websites alongside NHS South West, GP Online and Spindogs have an enviable heritage of managing complex digital transformation projects on a regional scale. Unlike other direct to GP suppliers, we are fundamentally setup to support national and regional adoption on both commercial and operational levels.
Rolling out GP Online at scale is commercially advantageous for regions in addition to benefitting from the range of dedicated features and functionality and channel shift outcomes. Economies of scale can result in tailored pricing based on volume or enhanced onboarding and recruitment support, ensuring your region or ICB budget goes further.
Alongside a market-leading digital product, GP Online surgeries also have access to a suite of complementary marketing tools to help promote visibility within the existing patient base.
Including expertly designed and NHS-aligned digital assets such as waiting room screens, social media graphics and email flyers, GPs can maximise the impact of their new website launch. Further, printed assets such as leaflets, flyers and banners can also be purchased, if required.
As indicated by the ability to deliver volume with economies of scale, GP Online can support the mobilisation of delivery teams and mass-rollouts quickly. A dedicated project manager will build central regional relationships while facilitating individual launches on a surgery-to-surgery level, minimising the impact on regions and ICBs team resources and ensuring smooth adoption.
With over 20 years’ experience delivering digital transformation and measurable impact across public, private and third sector, Spindogs are trusted partners to some of the world’s most recognisable brands and public organisations.
